COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland was being dominated on the boards and seemingly incapable of scoring from the outside. As the deficit against Towson reached double digits, coach Mark Turgeon began to wonder if a comeback was possible.I wasnt sure if we could do it, he admitted.Down by 13 points with 14 minutes left, the Terrapins (4-0) rallied behind Melo Trimble to pull out a 71-66 victory Sunday.Trimble scored 27 and freshman Justin Jackson added 21 for Maryland, which used a game-ending 35-17 surge to squeeze past its in-state foe.We figured out how to win. Its what we do, Turgeon said. When we were down 13 it didnt look good.It was tied at 66 when Towson guard Deshaun Morman missed a shot and Trimble was fouled getting the rebound.Trimble made two free throws with 35.9 seconds left. After Mike Morsell misfired for the Tigers, freshman Anthony Cowan was fouled and sank one of two shots for a three-point cushion.Towsons last chance faded when Morman missed a 3-pointer and Kevin Huerter made two fouls shots on the other end.It was just about us playing defense and dialing in, said Trimble, who went 4 for 15 from the floor but was 16 for 17 at the foul line. The Tigers (2-1) outrebounded Maryland 46-33 but were outscored 26-15 at the foul line.Morsell led the Tigers with 17 points and Morman had 15. Towson is 0-13 against the Terrapins. The Tigers had more height than Maryland, but they didnt have Trimble.Im a Red Sox fan, Towson coach Pat Skerry said. Its like playing against Mariano Rivera back in the day. Hes like the ultimate closer for a team. The Tigers, on the other hand, couldnt make a sizeable lead stand up.Towson opened the second half with a 13-2 run to move in front 49-36 with 14:27 remaining. Maryland missed its first seven field-goal tries before Trimble ended the dry spell with a 3-point play. That ignited a 12-1 run that got the Terrapins to 50-48. The Tigers then expanded their lead to 56-51, but soon after that, Trimble hit a 3 from the corner to put Maryland up 61-58, its first lead since 27-26 late in the first half. Were an unbelievable work in progress when it comes to our offense right now, Turgeon said. With 12 minutes to go in the game I finally figured out what was going to work and we were able to do some good things against them.Unlike his coach, Trimble was confident the Terps could pull it out.We knew we could come back and hopefully change the momentum and try and get the lead back, he said. It was just about us playing defense and dialing in.The matchup was a campus-site game in the Barclays Center Classic, which does not put the teams in brackets until the action shifts to New York and Towson on Nov. 25.SHORTHANDEDMaryland was without guard Dion Wiley, who had a stomach virus. Turgeon is also waiting on 7-foot-1 center Michal Cekovsky, who has yet to play this year because of a sprained foot.THE TAKEAWAYTowson: The Tigers showed they can complete with one of the better teams in the nation, which should serve as a confidence-boost when they get into play in the Colonial Athletic Conference.I told our guys our goal is to get into the NCAA tournament, Skerry said. Thats the type of team youre going to play against and be able to beat.Maryland: This marked the third time in four games the Terrapins were involved in a close game. Barely beating American and Towson is nothing to crow about, but the experience gained from playing in tight affairs could prove beneficial in the future.Weve figured out how to win three closes games now, which is a (good) sign when youre playing so many young kids like we are, Turgeon said.UP NEXTTowson travels to Boston College on Tuesday night for another campus-site game in the Barclays Classic.Maryland hosts Stony Brook on Tuesday night in the Barclays Classic. The Terps are 2-0 against Stony Brook, winning in 2000 and 2012. LOUIS -- Heading into the final stretch of the season, the issues for the Chicago Bears banged-up defence only seem to be getting worse. DENVER -- The Colorado Rockies are facing an imminent decision regarding Chad Qualls. He has been ill with a virus and last pitched July 15.Qualls was unavailable Friday night as was Adam Ottavino, who had pitched in back-to-back games for the first time since coming back from Tommy John surgery in May 2015. So manager Walt Weiss turned to Jason Motte to start the eighth.Motte threw 32 pitches Thursday night but that was after being off the two previous days.Referring to the possibility of Qualls going on the disabled list, a move that could be made retroactive to last Saturday, Rockies manager Walt Weiss said, Hes been pretty sick. Thats a conversation we need to have as we look toward these next couple days -- if hes going to be available or not. You can only go short so long especially the way weve been using our pen.Rookie left-hander Tyler Anderson will start Saturday and try to minimize the load on the bullpen. Hes 2/3 with a 3.43 in his first seven career starts. Five of those games have been at Coors Field, where Anderson is 2-1 with a 3.26 ERA. In 30 1/3 innings in those games at Coors Field, Anderson has seven walks and 29 strikeouts.Coors Field can be a demon to a young Rockies pitcher, trying to gain his footing in the majors. For example, Jon Gray had trouble pitching there last season after being recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque but has thrived at Coors Field this year. And Eddie Butler, who is starting at Albuquerque and went 2-5 with a 6.96 ERA in 12 games, nine starts, with the Rockies this season, has never settled in at Coors Field. To his credit, Anderson is faring just fine at Coors Field, giving him one less thing to worry about at the outset of his career. Hes coming off a Coors Field win in his last start Monday against Tampa Bay in which he allowed four runs in 6 1/3 innings in the Rockies 7-4 victory.Just the biggest thing to pitchhing here from all the guys that Ive talked to and everything we stress is not having walks, Anderson said.dddddddddddd You can see, my last start, I gave up the most runs (four) and I had also the most walks (3).Those two correlate, especially at this field because usually you can give up a couple base hits and the guy doesnt score. But here a lot of balls make it to the wall, because theres so much ground out there that the guys score from first (on a double) all the time. So I think just eliminating walks is the biggest thing. The Rockies have won eight straight games against the Braves at Coors Field and 12 of their past 14 overall against the Braves.Matt Wisler, who will oppose Anderson, is 4-9 with a 4.67 ERA in 19 games, 18 starts. In his last outing Monday at Cincinnati, Wisler lost 8-2 and allowed eight hits and six runs, five earned, in five innings. In 11 starts on the road this season, Wisler is 1-6 with a 4.33 ERA.The Braves expect to know more Saturday about their ace Julio Teheran, who left Fridays game in the fifth inning with tightness in the latissimus dorsi muscles on the right side of his back. The Braves are likely to wait a day or two before deciding whether it will be necessary to put Teheran on the 15-day disabled list.Teheran said he felt discomfort in his lat while throwing a pitch in the third inning but thought he could make it through five innings. He felt something again in the lat while facing Mark Reynolds to lead off the fifth and left the game after his infield single.Braves interim manager Brian Snitker said he hopes Teheran could return within a few days.Hopefully, its all clear, but well see, Teheran said. Well take it day-by-day, and hopefully I dont have to miss a start or anything like that. ' ' '
