PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Rutgers first-year coach Chris Ash doesnt care that No. 9 Penn State has a chance to win the Big Ten Conference title, and he has even less interest in seeing his Scarlet Knights play the role of spoiler on Saturday night. All Ash cares about is that this is Rutgers final home game and he wants his seniors to go out with a win.It has nothing to do with going to bowl game or anything like that. The Scarlet Knights (2-8, 0-7) arent going anywhere this year. Its been a tough first season with the former Ohio State co-defensive coordinator as their coach. They have not been very competitive, so knocking off Penn State (8-2, 6-1) would make their season. Were not talking about spoilers, Ash said. Were playing for ourselves and were playing for our seniors. Were playing to try to get better. But this week it is about the seniors. We have a lot of them. A lot of them that have done a tremendous amount of positive things here at Rutgers.Rutgers will have to improve to be competitive this week. It has lost seven in a row, including a 49-0 loss to struggling Michigan State last weekend. The results have been even worse against the conferences elite. It was beaten 58-0 by No.2 Ohio State and 78-0 by No. 4 Michigan.Ohio State and Michigan are currently tied with Penn State for first place in the Big Ten East. If the Nittany Lions can beat Rutgers and Michigan State in their final two games, and Michigan were to lose one of its last two, they would win the division. This is going to be an emotional game, Penn State coach James Franklin said. There are a lot of ties on both sides. Theyre going to come out being aggressive in how they call the game, the decisions they make and how their players play. We want to start fast each week, because we want to start fast each week, and thats going to give us the best chance to be successful consistently. No other things factor into it. Its the best thing to do to give us the best chance to be successful.Heres some things to watch in the game:SAQUON BARKLEY: The Nittany Lions running back has run for 733 yards and six touchdowns in the last five games. He leads the Big Ten with 1,113 yards rushing. The problem is Barkley, who ran for 195 yards and two TDs in the game against Rutgers last year, took a couple of big hits as Indiana loaded the box last week. Franklin might decide to take some of the load off Barkley and let freshmen Miles Sanders and Andre Robinson get more carries.RUTGERS D LINE: With Penn States offensive line in flux because of injuries, defensive tackle Darius Hamilton and end Julian Pennix-Odrick will be looking to make a statement in their final home games. Hamilton has 43 tackles and a half sack in overcoming a knee injury that caused him to miss almost all of last season. Pinnix-Odrick has 41 tackles and a team-high 4? sacks.BIG CATCHES: Tight end Mike Gesicki has stepped up in the last two games despite playing on a sore ankle. He has had nine catches for 153 yards, including five for 88 yards last weekend. He has career highs of 37 catches for 499 yards, including four for more than 40 yards. The junior is tied for the Big Ten lead and tied for No. 9 nationally in receptions by a tight end. He ranks No. 1 in the conference and fifth in the FBS in receiving yards by a tight end.AUTOMATIC: Placekicker Tyler Davis has yet to miss a kick that has not been blocked in his career. He is 24-for-26 on field goal attempts, with both misses being blocks. He has also made all 46 of his PAT attempts. He is a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award, which goes to the nations top kicker.---Freelancer Travis Johnson in State College, Pennsylvania, contributed to this report.---More AP college football: www.collegefootball.ap.org and https://twitter.com/AP-Top25 . Jalen Adams drove fearlessly to the rim, dished to open teammates, soared in over taller players to snatch rebounds. The sophomore guard nearly had a triple-double and the Huskies needed nearly every bit of it to hold off a feisty upset-maker.Adams had 25 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds, helping Connecticut survive for a 93-82 victory over Division II Chaminade Tuesday in the Maui Invitational. He did a great job leading our team, UConn coach Kevin Ollie said. He did an unbelievable job finding his teammates, scoring and then when we needed a rebound, he got it.UConn (2-3) had all kinds of trouble with Oklahoma States pressing defense to open the Maui Invitational, turning it over 18 times -- all on Cowboys steals -- in a 98-90 loss.On Day 2, the Huskies had a hard time shaking the deep-shooting Silverswords (2-2), who have had a penchant for knocking off big-name opponents.UConn shot 61 percent and had a 20-point advantage in the paint and 13 more rebounds, yet werent able to pull away from Chaminade until the closing minutes.Rodney Purvis had 23 points and hit three 3-pointers in the final 4 minutes after going hard to the floor.Vance Jackson added 16 for UConn, which was without forward Terry Larrier after he injured his left knee against Oklahoma State in the tournament opener.Everybody was just hungry and wanted to get back and prove we can win and compete in this tournament, said Adams, who made 12 of 17 shots. We definitely didnt come down here to lose.Chaminade has a certain mystique around it in Maui, thanks to a long list of upset victories. The Silverswords were blown out by No. 4 North Carolina in their Maui opener, but used their perimeter shooting to stretch the Huskies on defense and keep them from pulling away.Rohndell Goodwin had 20 points, Sam Daly and Kiran Shastri had 19 each for Chamminade, which made 14 of 32 from 3-point range.ddddddddddddWe were feeling it for a while today, Shastri said. The Silverswords hit 6 of 10 shots to lead 18-13 and, unlike the night, pushed back when a bigger team tried to lean on them.Chaminade trailed by seven, but tied the game at 39-all late in the first half on a layup by Austin Pope and Goodwins short jumper after a turnover on the inbound play. The Silverswords hit 9 of 17 from 3-point range in the first half and were tied with the Huskies at 45-all.Adams carried UConn in the opening 20 minutes with 15 points, eight assists and six rebounds. The Silverswords continued to go right at the Huskies in the second half, dropping in long-range 3-pointers and driving fearlessly to the rim to stay within 61-60 midway through.UConn finally started to gain some separation as the Silverswords started missing shots they had been making all day.The Huskies stretched their lead to 80-71 on Purvis corner 3-pointer with 5? minutes left and added three more to close the Silverswords out. Those late 3-pointers were the difference in the game, Chaminade coach Eric Bovaird said.BIG PICTUREUConn: The Huskies survived the big upset, yet not being able to shake a Division II opponent is not a good sign. Adams has been stellar in Maui, but the Huskies will need more than just him for the fifth-place game and beyond.Chaminade: The Silverswords have had their share of upsets in the Maui Invitational and nearly pulled off another. Keeping up with a big-time program like UConn should do nothing but build confidence for the Silverswords the rest of the season.UP NEXTUConn: Faces No. 13 Oregon in the fifth-place game.Chaminade: Plays in the seventh-place game against Tennessee.
