(SportsNetwork.com) - As it turns out, Rex Ryan neednt hire a realtor in South Beach. Though Ryans six-year run as head coach of the New York Jets will presumably come to an end after a Week 17 visit to the Miami, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross has already eliminated one destination from the embattled Gang Green leaders subsequent offseason interviewing tour. Ross confirmed after Miamis 37-35 defeat of Minnesota last week that Joe Philbin will return for a fourth season along the sidelines in 2015. Its important for a head coach of a NFL football team that the owner believes in him, what he is doing and the program he is instilling, Philbin said. Its very important. If you dont have that type of belief and faith from the owner its not going to work. I know if players dont believe in their coaches and coaches dont believe in their players, you have no chance. But again, Ive been in this profession a long time, I wasnt worried about my own personal future. Philbin improved from 7-9 to 8-8 in his first two seasons with the Dolphins, and can get to 9-7 with a victory in the finale against the Jets, though any hopes for the franchises first playoff berth since 2008 were erased last week when Pittsburgh beat Kansas City. Miami is near New York in terms of defensive statistics - allowing 22.4 points and 333.3 yards per week through 15 games - and defeated the Jets, 16-13, in the teams first 2014 matchup in Week 13. New York allows an average of 323.2 yards and 25.1 points per week. Philbins holdover to next season was also welcomed on the offensive side, where quarterback Ryan Tannehill has posted solid numbers in 2014, including a 67 percent completion rate, a per-game average of 252.4 yards, 26 touchdowns and a 93.2 passer rating. In the win against Minnesota, Tannehill had 35 completions, 396 yards and four touchdowns. Thats exciting news for me, and I think everyone on the team, Tannehill said. We believe in coach Philbin and the program he has and everything he has set in place. The sky seemed the limit for Ryan after he arrived in 2009 and immediately steered the Jets to consecutive appearances in the AFC Championship Game for the first time in franchise history. New York dropped to 8-8 amid turmoil in year three, however, and has failed to exceed .500 in three more seasons under his leadership. These last couple seasons have been pretty tough, theres no doubt, he said. So, Id say this ones probably a dog-year season. Weve only got three wins. At the same time, it feels like yesterday. So its like, man, Im still here with my guys and I enjoy coming to work. Like, every day Im excited about presenting a game plan and doing different things and watching players grow. So that part of it has been great. His job security hasnt been helped by shortcomings at quarterback, where the tandem of youngster Geno Smith and veteran Michael Vick have provided the leagues lowest per-game passing average of 170.4 yards. Smith began the season as the starter before losing the role to Vick in November. Hes returned to start the last four games, but his season-long passer rating (70.9) is ahead of just two full-time quarterbacks - Jacksonvilles Blake Bortles (70.8) and Tampa Bays Josh McCown (70.5). Smith managed just 65 yards passing in the Dec. 1 loss to the Dolphins. The toughest part about it is not being able to continue to play for the same coach, the same guy that you learned to love, you invest so much in, and you believe (in) them, Smith said. To reset and re-adjust is a tough thing to do, but we are professionals and we have to do it. A change could be good for us all, so if it happens, when it happens, then well see. WHAT TO WATCH FOR Win the Rematch Miami right guard Mike Pouncey has struggled with injuries and a new position during a largely ineffectual 2014 season, and has surrendered three sacks and 24 quarterback hurries on the year. But he held his own against New Yorks Sheldon Richardson - allowing just two hurries - in Week 13, and could go a long way toward prolonging Week 17 drives if he replicates the effort. Genos Secret Weapon Truth told, the extent of Smiths role in the Jets game plan is often turning to his right or left and handing the ball to a running back. But, with the addition of versatile playmaker Percy Harvin, the possibilities are at least multiplied. Harvin ran six times for 27 yards in Week 13, and hell likely be covered by cornerback Brent Grimes when it comes to passing downs this time around. OVERALL ANALYSIS One coach has eluded the hangmans noose, while the other one likely will not. Ironically, its that lack of job status that could provide the difference in the finale. While Philbin has more overall talent on both sides of the ball, Ryan does intermittently get a lot out of a roster thats really not even on an NFL average level. That bunch will get itself up for one last go-round before Black Monday comes. Sports Network predicted outcome: Jets 17, Dolphins 16 Pittsburgh Pirates Store . The thing that he stressed and the thing that we are stressing is that were focused on winning. All the talk about unity and leadership in the locker room is the sort of thing that comes with a 3-6 record, which is now an annual occurrence in Washington.Or, as fullback Darrel Young put it this week: If we win, theres no talk about leadership. End of conversation.Joining in that chorus on Wednesday was a leadership voice that has been mostly quiet this season.Nine-year veteran nose tackle Barry Cofield is back on the active roster after spending eight weeks recovering from a severe ankle sprain and groin surgery while on short-term injured reserve. He said hes kept a public silence because its hard to set an example while standing on the sideline. From a leadership perspective, I just want to lead by example, Cofield said. Im just going to be honest — I feel it can be overstated.Im kind of on DYs level: When youre winning, no one worries about it. No asks you who are the leaders. ... Maybe the difference between the team that wins and loses the Super Bowl is a great leader that just brings something to the table, but the difference between being 3--6 and the playoffs is not speeches.dddddddddddd Its not having somebody to look at that you consider a leader. Its really about individuals doing their job better, so we need to start there. For what its worth, Griffin said he feels the Redskins are getting closer as a family.I dont know everything, thats for dang sure, but I do know a little thing about changing the culture, Griffin said. And it takes everybody from the top down. The players have to be willing, and I think weve got guys in that locker room that are willing.Coach Jay Gruden echoed the sentiment, saying the media coverage of the teams leadership issues has, if anything, strengthened some bonds.I think since it came to light with yall saying that we werent a unified locker room, (that) we didnt have leaders, I think it kind of maybe made people think about it and realize were OK — maybe, he said, adding a chuckle.I think thats the case. I think theres some guys that are more willing now to step out of their shadow and maybe speak up a little bit more than maybe they wouldve. ... We dont have any leadership problems in my book, and the locker rooms been united as far as I can tell.Gruden has said in the past that Griffin can try too hard to be liked and can be sensitive to outside criticism, but the coach said Wednesday the QB is handling himself well.I just think that people can chip away at you if you continue to read everything written about you and listen to everything thats said about you on television, Gruden said.Hes a human, it can wear on you. I think really for a young kid thats been through as much as he has, both good and bad, already at age 24, hes shown the fact that he is a thick-skinned guy.I dont think anybody is liked by everybody. Heck, Im not liked by everybody. I might be, the coach said with a laugh. But its not about being liked. Its about performing at a consistent high level.___AP NFL websites: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL___Follow Joseph White on Twitter: http://twitter.com/JGWhiteAP ' ' '
