Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Hey Ref! Im wondering if you could enlighten me on why the hand pass goal was permitted by the Canucks against the Oilers this past Saturday? Is it because it wasnt an intentional hand pass? As an Oilers fan, Im sensitive to this as in 2006 the Oilers had a game-tying goal in the final minute called back because Mick McGeough thought a hand pass might have occurred (it didnt). However, this time a very clear hand pass was permitted to set up a goal. Thanks, Justin Hazenberg PS - Love the column. Sure wish the league would allow active officials to explain calls. Justin: The distinct and deliberate action demonstrated by Alexandre Burrows to play the puck with his hand constitutes a violation of rule 79.1 (Hand Pass). Play should have been immediately stopped once Dan Hamhuis gained puck possession following the redirect off the glove of Burrows. No goal should have resulted on this play. The language of 79.1 is as follows: A player shall be permitted to stop or bat a puck in the air with his open hand, or push it along the ice with his hand, and the play shall not be stopped unless, in the opinion of the on-ice officials, he has directed the puck to a teammate, or has allowed his team to gain an advantage, and subsequently possession and control of the puck is obtained by a player of the offending team, either directly or deflected off any player or official. On at least two counts, the language of the rule was satisfied once Burrows reached to play the puck with his hand. This action by Burrows caused the puck to be illegally directed onto the stick of teammate Dan Hamhuis (possession and control) thereby creating an advantage for the Canucks in violation of the rule. The fact that Burrows made a deliberate attempt to play the puck with his hand should have eliminated any reasonable determination by the officials that the puck was simply deflected as opposed to a violation of the hand pass rule. The expected interpretation and standard of enforcement of rule 79 was not met. Coach Dallas Eakins and the Edmonton Oilers had a legitimate complaint on the ruling of this play. Fake Yeezy Online .
