BERLIN -- Shinji Kagawa starred on his return for Borussia Dortmund in a 3-1 win over Freiburg, while Franck Ribery scored on his injury comeback as Bayern Munich defeated Stuttgart 2-0 in the Bundesliga on Saturday. Kagawa, back at Dortmund after an unhappy two-year spell at Manchester United, was given a heros welcome by fans who remembered his role in helping the club to successive Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012. The Japan midfielder had a hand in Adrian Ramos opening goal in the 34th minute, playing through Kevin Grosskreutz to cross for the Colombian striker at the post. Kagawa then scored on a counterattack in the 41st, when Henrikh Mkhitaryan let Ramos cross through for him to pick his spot with a low shot. The attacking midfielder went off to a standing ovation in the 64th. He had cramp, a "good sign" according to Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp. "Shinji was smiling the whole time, at least until he got the cramp," Dortmund midfielder Sebastian Kehl said. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang secured the result with a chip over the outrushing goalkeeper in the 78th, three minutes after he went on as a substitute. Oliver Sorg claimed Freiburgs consolation in the final minute, by which time the home side had already turned attention to Tuesdays visit of Arsenal in the Champions League. Mario Goetze got Bayern off the mark in the 27th, and Ribery marked his return from a knee problem by scoring with five minutes remaining. Borussia Moenchengladbach forward Max Kruse led his team to a deserved 4-1 win over Schalke in the late game. Kruse set Andre Hahn on his way to score with a fierce shot in the 17th, sent in a free kick for Hahn to head past Schalke goalkeeper Ralf Faehrmann in the 50th, and then scored himself in the 56th, four minutes after Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting pulled one back with a penalty. Raffael scored in the 79th and Schalke had Faehrmann to thank for a host of saves to ensure it didnt get any worse. "Well be working in the next few days, licking our wounds, and then it carries on. We want to present ourselves well at Chelsea," said Schalke coach Jens Keller, looking ahead to Wednesdays Champions League game. Mainz won 3-1 at Hertha Berlin, Wolfsburg earned a 1-1 draw at Hoffenheim, and promoted sides Paderborn and Cologne maintained their unbeaten status with a scoreless draw. Bayern, which hosts Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday, was hardly threatened by Stuttgart, but was made to work hard for its second win from three Bundesliga games. "Were always happy when we win," Bayern coach Pep Guardiola said. Xabi Alonso made his home debut since moving from Real Madrid, and it was the Spaniards free kick that led to the opening goal. Goetze stopped Antonio Ruedigers attempted clearance, cut inside Vedad Ibisevic, and shot through a host of players inside the far post. Holger Badstuber, who recently returned after missing 20 months with a knee injury and two operations, had to go off before the break with a thigh muscle problem. "Its not too serious," the Bayern defender said. Ribery made an immediate impact after going on as a substitute in the 68th. Four minutes later he set up Alonsos deflected effort off the post and Robert Lewandowski struck the post again from the rebound. Lewandowski set up Ribery to seal the result with a low shot through the Stuttgart keepers legs. "The day went well," said Bayern forward Thomas Mueller on his 25th birthday. In Berlin, Mainz forward Shinji Okazaki scored on the rebound after Hertha goalkeeper Thomas Kraft twice saved from Koo Ja-cheol in the 36th, and Sami Allagui slid in to score against his former club in the 70th. Ronny pulled one back with a penalty in the 86th, but Okazaki snuffed out any hope of a comeback with his second goal in injury time. "Were still in development and the three points are very, very important for it," said Mainz coach Kasper Hjulmand after his first Bundesliga win. With 28 goals since January 2011, Okazaki is the highest scoring Japanese player in the Bundesliga. Ivica Olics 89th-minute strike was enough for a point for Wolfsburg. Hoffenheim striker Anthony Modeste put the home side ahead in the 55th. Air Max Plus Scontate .ca look back at each of the Top 10 stories of 2013. McClendon becomes the third manager hired by general manager Jack Zduriencik. Wedge quit at the end of the Mariners fourth straight losing season, citing differences with the front office on how to move forward with improving the team. Wedges three-year contract expired after the season. The 54-year-old McClendon is the 16th full-time manager in club history. He takes over a club that went 71-91 last year. He will be formally introduced by the team on Thursday. "I am extremely excited about the opportunity to manage the Seattle Mariners," McClendon said in a statement. "Seattle has a tremendous group of talented players and the fans and city should be excited about the clubs future. Im looking for this group to take a big step forward." Seattle is the fourth club to fill its managerial vacancy. The Washington Nationals hired Matt Williams to replace Davey Johnson. The Cincinnati Reds, who fired Dusty Baker after a 90-win season, went with pitching coach Bryan Price as their new manager and Detroit chose Brad Ausmus to take over for Jim Leyland -- a job McClendon interviewed for. The Chicago Cubs are still looking for a manager. McClendon was the manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates from 2001-05, going 336-446 during the Pirates 20-year stretch of losing seasons. Pittsburgh never won more than 75 games or finished higher than fourth in the NL Central during his tenure and he was fired in early September of the 2005 season. After Pittsburgh, McClendon settled into a stable role Leylands staff in Detroit. For eight seasons, McClendon was a coach for the Tigers, including the last seven as hitting coach. He interviewed for managerial positions in Seattle and Miami during that stretch, but never got an offer. "Lloyd is a bright and articulate guy," Zduriencik said in the statement. "He has major league managerial experience and has served in a vital capacity in Detroit under one of the games best managers. He is a tireless worker and is very respected by the players with whom he has worked.dddddddddddd We look forward to Lloyd embracing our players as we move the Mariners forward." Zduriencik didnt expect to be in this position. As of late September, Zduriencik was preparing for Wedge to be around to continue to rebuild Seattle into a contender. Instead Wedge left and Zduriencik was tasked with hiring the eighth manager or interim manager for the franchise since 2002. McClendon was one of five reported finalists for the Mariners job, a list that included Joey Cora, Oakland bench coach Chip Hale, Dodgers third base coach Tim Wallach and San Diego bench coach Rick Renteria. McClendon was the only one of the group with previous major league managerial experience. Cora had ties to the Mariners franchise from his time as a player in Seattle. McClendon spent eight seasons in the majors as a player with Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and the Chicago Cubs. He immediately transitioned from a playing career into coaching, serving as a hitting coach for the Pirates in 1995 until he accepted their managerial position before the 2001 season. McClendon will likely need time to build a winner in Seattle even with a starting rotation anchored by AL Cy Young award finalist Hisashi Iwakuma and 2010 Cy Young winner Felix Hernandez. The Mariners havent been to the post-season since 2001, and there are numerous roster questions for the club playing in one of baseballs toughest divisions. Seattle has high hopes for young catcher Mike Zunino, shortstop Brad Miller and second baseman Nick Franklin. Justin Smoak solidified himself at first base after showing some consistency at the plate last season and third baseman Kyle Seager was the Mariners most reliable everyday player. But even with making a qualifying offer, it seems unlikely slugging designated hitter Kendrys Morales will accept a $14.1 million, one-year deal when there could be a bigger pot in free agency. Raul Ibanez hit 29 homers at age 41, but there its unclear if Seattle wants to bring him back, and hes not a long-term solution. The rest of the Mariners outfield is unproven and their bullpen struggled for stretches of the season. ' ' '
