BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- Mike Magee made sure Chicagos run to the playoffs wouldnt be spoiled by Toronto FC. Magee scored his 20th goal of the season on a second half penalty kick to lead the hosts to a 1-0 win Saturday and put the Fire on verge of clinching a playoff berth. Toronto (5-17-11) missed their own chances as they fell to Chicago for the eighth time in 16 all-time meetings. "We knew wed have our opportunities, and what we didnt want to do was go down early," Toronto coach Ryan Nelson said. "The chances we had in the first half, they were incredibly good. But we have to finish. We didnt." Toronto goalkeeper Stefan Frei, making his 2013 debut in goal with Joseph Bendiks one-game suspension, had two saves on the night. The first was a diving stop on a Juan Luis Anangono header that drew raves from Nelson. "That save that Stefan made was probably for me the save of the season," Nelson said. "I havent seen it again but just from watching it live, I cant think of any (better) save that Ive seen." But Frei couldnt stop Magee, who had missed his previous penalty kick try last month against Montreal. "The last one off the post was in the back of my mind," said Magee, now tied for MLS scoring lead with Montreals Marco Di Vaio. "(But) I got up there with all the confidence in the world. I was never going to miss that." Magee had a free kick into a crowd lined in front of Frei and officials called Toronto for a handball in the ensuing scramble, leading to the penalty kick. The Fire forward then skipped a shot into the back of the net. "Very disappointing with the penalty kick decision," defender and captain Steven Caldwell said. "We felt that it was a very poor decision by the referee and it cost us a point, or possibly three." The Fire (14-12-7) are temporarily tied for third in the Eastern Conference with Montreal. A win next Sunday in New York or a loss or tie by New England would lock up Chicagos playoff berth. Toronto and the Fire tied 1-1 on Sept. 11 at BMO Field. Since then Toronto has dropped four of its last five heading into next Saturdays season finale against Montreal. A 4-1 victory over D.C. United on Sept. 28 is the lone bright spot in that run. The leagues advisory/finance committee held its first meeting about Sterling on Thursday, two days after Silver said he would urge owners to force a sale of the team. The 10-member committee held a conference call to discuss "the process for termination of Donald T. Sterlings ownership of the Los Angeles Clippers," NBA executive vice-president Mike Bass said in a statement. "The committee unanimously agreed to move forward as expeditiously as possible and will reconvene next week." Silver banned Sterling for life and fined him $2.5 million Tuesday for making racist comments. Sterling can have no association with the league or the team, but Silver wants more. A forced sale would require approval by three-fourths of the leagues 30 owners. Silver said he was confident he would get the votes. Minnesota owner Glen Taylor chairs the committee that also includes Miamis Micky Arison, the Lakers Jeanie Buss, Oklahoma Citys Clay Bennett, New Yorks James Dolan, Bostons Wyc Grousbeck, San Antonios Peter Holt, Phoenixs Robert Sarver, Indianas Herb Simon, and Torontos Larry Tanenbaum. A number of big names have already expressed interest in buying that team that Sterling has owned since 1981, inclluding Oprah Winfrey and Floyd Mayweather Jr.dddddddddddd. First, owners must force Sterling to give it up -- which he may choose fight. According to the leagues constitution and bylaws, Silver or an owner would have to file a written charge against Sterling, who would have five days to respond. Silver would then call a hearing of the board of governors, which would vote after hearing the evidence against Sterling. Sacramento Kings owner Vivek Ranadive hopes it doesnt come to that. "I dont want to talk about kind of the legal side of it because I cant really comment on it, but my feeling is that I have faith in people," he said. "And I would hope that at some point Mr. Sterling would come to his senses and do the right thing. That he would apologize to Magic Johnson, that he would apologize to the fans, the league, the black community and he would do the right thing and he would accept what Commissioner Silver has suggested, he would put the team up for sale and perhaps even take a very small portion of the substantial profits and donate them to a good cause. "Its not going to be easy to own a team where the fans dont welcome you, where the sponsors shun you and where youre not welcomed by the other owners. And I think he can do the right thing and hopefully good sense will prevail at some point."
