TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona Cardinals were able to generate some offence in their regular-season finale and can breathe a bit easier if Ryan Lindley is their quarterback in their playoff opener. But the defence, once the backbone of the team, is coming off its two worst performances of the season. Those games came against athletic, mobile quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Colin Kaepernick — and Arizona faces another one in Cam Newton when the Cardinals play at Carolina in a wild card game on Saturday. He presents different problems than Colin and Russell, Arizona coach Bruce Arians said Monday. Hes more of a combination of both those guys. He can really throw the football extremely well from the pocket. It presents a multitude of problems for us.Lindley completed 23 of 39 passes for 316 yards and his first two NFL touchdowns but was intercepted three times in the Cardinals 20-17 loss at San Francisco. At least publicly, the Cardinals still hold out hope that Drew Stanton will be back this week. He has missed the last two games with a sprained right knee and had it scoped last week after developing an infection.Hes progressing and nothings really changed, Arians said. Weve got our fingers crossed that possibly he could go later in the week. After a bad day against Seattle the previous week, Lindley at least moved the offence on Sunday.Arians said he saw improvement in a little bit of everything. The command of it, where he was going with the ball and Mike (Floyd) made some plays for him, which we didnt do in the other game, which we had chances to, Arians said. Its just a matter of continuing to grow. After a 9-1 start, the Cardinals lost four of their final six games.A litany of injuries finally caught up with the team after Stanton, who had been Carson Palmers backup, was injured. That left the job to Lindley, who was released by Arizona at the end of preseason then re-signed off the San Diego practice squad. The offences problems, then, were predictable. The defences werent. In the last two games, the Cardinals allowed 596 yards against Seattle and 395 to San Francisco. Wilson ran for 88 yards in six carries, Kaepernick 63 yards in seven attempts.Arizona, among the league leaders in run defence most of the season, allowed 267 yards on the ground against the Seahawks and 206 against the 49ers.Its just because of tackling, Arians said. Guys missing tackles. The pass defence had problems, too. A miscommunication between safety Tyrann Mathieu and cornerback Antonio Cromartie led to Kaepernicks 76-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Anquan Boldin.Getting in the right gap and making a tackle should be pretty easy, Arians said. As far as (defensive backs) making a hand signal — whos got coverage when youve got an all-out blitz on — thats not really hard either. The fact that it happened yesterday, Id much rather have it happen then than next Saturday. The players had Monday off, but after the game on Sunday, cornerback Patrick Peterson said the defence cant win like that.As a defence, we cant give up big plays as we did today, he said. We cant have those mistakes next week, because everything is on the line. Its win or go home.Through most of the season, Arizona was among the league leaders in takeaways. They havent had any the last two weeks. That makes the job even tougher for the offence.Arians said Arizona will have inside linebacker Larry Foote back. The 13-year NFL veteran missed Sundays game with a sore knee. Before that, he had played on all but two snaps for the Cardinals defence all season.Theres no doubt we missed him out there, Arians said. ... the spirit that he brings. When a big play happens, its not woe is me, hes getting in somebodys face. The coach was asked if his team simply is not peaking at the right time.I would think youd say that, he said. But I dont think theres any concern, because were in the playoffs and it doesnt matter. It does to the oddsmakers. The Maple Leafs dropped a 4-2 decision to the hosting Washington Capitals on Friday.GREEN BAY, Wis. - After an exhilarating win in the snow, Pittsburgh safety Troy Polamalu got even better news when he returned to the locker room. Remarkably, the Steelers are still in the playoff chase. Polamalus forced fumble set up LeVeon Bells 1-yard touchdown run with 1:28 left, then Pittsburgh withstood Green Bays last throw into the end zone and dealt the Packers playoff hopes a blow with a 38-31 victory Sunday. Its a longshot, but the Steelers (7-8), after starting 0-4 this season, are still mathematically in the hunt for an AFC wild-card spot. They need a lot of help. "Its been a long road for us, but we still have our struggles. We were one play from losing that game," Polamalu said. It would be a near-miracle if they can get through another week. The Steelers need to beat the Browns in Week 17, and need the Dolphins, Ravens and Chargers — all 8-7 — to lose. "Its irrelevant, to be honest. Nothing has changed from our standpoint," Polamalu said. "Our mental approach to the game has got to be a week-by-week thing." The loss meant Green Bay (7-7-1) needed Chicago to lose at Philadelphia on Sunday night to stay in playoff contention. "Im not into drama," coach Mike McCarthy said. "We wanted to control our own destiny, we let that opportunity out of our hands." The Packers were back in control by nights end. The Bears lost 54-11, turning next weeks matchup with Green Bay into a showdown for the NFC North title at Soldier Field. Bells TD came soon after scrambling Packers quarterback Matt Flynn fumbled while being tackled by Polamalu. The Steelers recovered at the Packers 17 and scored five plays later, aided in part by an encroachment penalty by the Packers Nick Perry, on what would have been a field-goal attempt, to extend the drive. Micah Hydes 70-yard kickoff return to the Steelers 31 gave the Packers one last chance. Green Bay got to the 1, but Flynns pass to Jarrett Boykin sailed incomplete in the end zone to end the game. The last few seconds were marred by a false start penalty that pushed the Packers back to the 6 and included a 10-second runoff down to 10 seconds remaining. The Packers didnt get the snap off until 3 seconds were left, and Flynn said it appeared the umpire was holding uup the centre but started the clock while backing up.dddddddddddd "I dont know what happened, really," Flynn said. "The operation seemed kind of weird right there," Flynn said. Just like the rest of the second half. Steelers cornerback Cortez Allen returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger dashed through the snow for a 13-yard score in the third quarter. But a rarely seen illegal batting call nearly spoiled the Steelers night After the Steelers blocked the kick, a scramble ensued and the jostled ball ended up near the sideline, where Steelers defensive lineman Ziggy Hood poked it out of bounds. After conferring for a few minutes, the officials penalized Hood and gave possession to Green Bay, ruling the Steelers never controlled the ball after the block and that it never crossed the line of scrimmage of the Steelers 5. Safety Ryan Clark said he could have picked up the ball, but he was slowed after spraining his ankle in the game and tried to lateral the ball, but it squirted free and eventually got to Hood. "Its human error in this game," Clark said. "The guy didnt see it, he didnt have the opportunity to know if I had possession, so he made the call that he saw and thats part of football. Its no big deal, we won." Given another chance, Eddie Lacy barrelled into the end zone from 2 yards for a 21-17 lead. Instead of sulking, the Steelers answered quickly. Ben Roethlisberger found Matt Spaeth for an 11-yard touchdown pass with 2 minutes left in the third. Fourteen seconds later, Allen had his clutch interception. The Packers roared back with a 22-yard field goal by Mason Crosby before John Kuhns 1-yard touchdown run with 7:17 left tied the game at 31. But the Steelers finally finished things off with Bells touchdown run and the Packers failed last-ditch throw into the end zone. Notes: Bell finished with 26 carries for 124 yards. ... Lacy had 15 carries for 84 yards and two scores but later left with a sprained ankle. ... Our goalie made some unbelievable saves. (We) kind of left him hangin out to dry, including myself." Seguin scored at 7:42 of the third period on the power play and Dillon followed 47 seconds later to tie the score at 4. Subban called them lucky goals. "Dont get me wrong; they worked hard and they created opportunities for themselves," Subban said. "But two knuckle pucks, and theyre very deceiving or fortunate." Then Eller netted his 10th of the season at10:39 to put Montreal ahead for good. Nichushkin, taken down by Canadiens defenceman Josh Gorges near the crease, beat goalie Carey Price to his glove side on the penalty shot to tie the score at 2-2 early in the second period. Subban scored at 6:30 to put Montreal ahead. Price got his second assist of the season on the goal. Subban earlier made a backhand pass while wheeling through the left circle to set up Desharnais in the slot for a shot that beat Lehtonen, who was screened and falling in the crease, to give Montreal a 2-1 lead. Benn opened the scoring with his 14th goal of the season at 6:12 of the first period. He struck a one-timer near the right point following a cross-ice pass out of the left corner from Seguin. That extended Benns streak of consecutive games with a point to five, including goals in four. The Canadiens tied the score at the 11-minute mark of the period. Pacioretty took an outlet pass at the red line from Subban, raced in alone on the Dallas net and scored to Lehtonens glove side.
