On Monday night, the Winnipeg Goldeyes presented their 2012 American Association championship rings, raised their 2012 American Association championship banner and then went out and played an almost perfect baseball game. Behind a tremendous start from Matt Rusch and a huge two-run double from Tim Smith - a double that provided the game winning run - the defending champion Goldeyes beat the Laredo Lemurs 4-1 to win their 2013 home opener. Playing in front of a capacity-plus crowd of 7,886 at Shaw Park, the Goldeyes turned a sensational double play, made a handful of eye-popping plays in the field and got tremendous pitching performances from Rusch and relievers Chris Kissock, Brendan Lafferty and Patrick Keating, as they improved to 9-2 on the season and handed Laredo (10-1) its first loss of the year. It was an evening of celebration that was climaxed by a terrific fireworks show. In-between, the Goldeyes played brilliantly, scoring four runs on 10 hits while committing no errors. "We just wanted to go and play a good ball game and hopefully come up with a win," Goldeyes manager Rick Forney told Paul Edmonds on the TSN 1290 post-game show. "I thought Matt Rusch was very good tonight. He changed speeds and used both sides of the plate. I thought his command was real good. We just wanted to play well and I thought we did that." Indeed. The Goldeyes opened the scoring in the third inning when Josh Mazzola singled home Nick Liles. After Laredo tied it in the top of the fourth, the Goldeyes blew it open in the sixth when Smith hit a double down the first-base line that scored both Mazzola and Casey Haerther to give Winnipeg a 3-1 lead. Smith came home later in the inning on a single by Amos Ramon and that was it. "It was just one of those at bats," said Smith, on the Shaw TV post-game show. "I just wanted to see the ball as well as I could and make a good swing. It was a great night. When you hand a team its first loss of the year thats pretty satisfying." Rusch pitched six complete innings allowing just one run on four hits. Kissock pitched a perfect seventh, Lafferty a perfect eighth and while Keating allowed one hit in the ninth, the Lemurs were held scoreless and the Goldeyes had their ninth win of the young season. Mazzola was the hitting star of the night. He went three-for-three with a run scored and an RBI and raised his batting average to .349. Smith had two hits in four trips with a run scored and the two biggest RBI of the night. Rusch was the winner (3-0, 1.50 ERA), while Keating picked up his fourth save. David Newman was the Lemurs hard-luck loser (1-1, 3.24 ERA). Tuesday night, lefty Mark Hardy (2-0, 0.73 ERA) will get the start for Winnipeg while lefty Mark Serrano (3-0, 1.97) will start for Laredo. Its never too early to draft a fantasy football team, as long as youre aware of the potential risks and rewards at the time you draft. While many fantasy footballers will stick to drafting the week before the season kicks off, if you want to play in quite a few leagues or have difficult schedules to maneuver around, sometimes you just have to draft a bit earlier. That means you might have LeVeon Bell and his possible four-game suspension on your roster as a first overall pick, or you might have the recently reinstated Josh Gordon as a last-round pick.In our most recent staff mock draft (10-team, 2-QB PPR) -- the first since Gordons reinstatement became public -- it was Eric Karabell who selected the Cleveland wideout, who went in the eighth round. Gordon was Karabells fourth wideout selected, and his sixth potential flex (running back or wide receiver) option.By the time I chose Josh Gordon with pick No. 75, I felt like I had properly handled the portion of my draft in which I focused on securing two of the top 12 quarterbacks (due to the 2-QB league format), reasonable starting running backs who can catch some passes and at least two wide receivers who would really pile on the catches. Eric said of his pick. I did that better than I expected Id be able to, so it became upside time, and I felt like Josh Gordon and, three rounds later Arian Foster, were excellent examples of that strategy, so I acted and kind of enjoy the results. After all, if Gordon [and Foster] fail or dont even get on the field at all, its not that big of a deal, but its certainly worth the risk. This team has depth. If I had to choose Gordon probably one round earlier to secure him,, then I probably wouldnt have done it.dddddddddddd Do I really believe Gordon can stay out of trouble? Well, lets be optimistic. We know he can play football, at least when permitted, and for those who question the mess around him or the quarterback throwing to him or anything else about the situation, look at 2013. Look at Gordons numbers. He was arguably the overall fantasy MVP, and his quarterbacks were Moe, Curly and Larry. Gordon overcame that. With my eighth pick, Ill take the chance.Gordon is yet another high-risk, high-reward option in a league full of players with injury and off-the-field risks, and those participating in fantasy football drafts will have to assume those risks for the potential rewards. Note that Karabell was happy with the depth of his team, and considering the size of the league, he felt like missing on an eighth-round pick wasnt the end of the world and holding onto a league-winning wideout would be more than worth the risk.As we get closer to the start of the season, if Gordon remains on track for a Week 5 return, you can bet his ADP will creep higher and higher, and youll wish you had drafted him in the eighth round at the beginning of August. Thats why drafting earlier in the offseason isnt a negative, per se, but it provides a different set of risks and opportunities.Heres the full recap of our draft, conducted by (in drafting order): Jim McCormick, Mike Clay, Kyle Soppe, Stephania Bell, Jeff Ratcliffe, Eric Karabell, KC Joyner, Tom Carpenter, Keith Lipscomb and Leo Howell.
